Canada is experiencing a severe nursing shortage, with a third of nurses working overtime. The shortage persists despite a decline in overall job vacancies since Q2 2022. Nurses cite stress, mental health concerns and job dissatisfaction as reasons for the high vacancy rates. In Que., 43% of new nurses leave the profession before age 35, and N.B. loses 80% of young nurses. Private nursing agencies are becoming a popular alternative due to better pay and flexibility. However, the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions cautions against this trend, noting the significant public health funds paid to these agencies.
