England’s National Health Services created NHS Health Check as a health check-up for adults aged 40-74. It's designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes. NHS will now have nurses give patients advice on dementia risk. The roll-out follows a pilot and the Alzheimer's Research UK and the Alzheimer's Society called for it to become mandatory. It’s estimated that over 850,000 people are living with dementia in the U.K. with little public understanding of how it’s possible to reduce the risk. The addition comes as the program has come under fire for poor uptake and for not being cost-effective. One study suggested that even in the most deprived areas of the country, the Health Check program would not be cost-effective until 2040.
