Sarah Pakzad, a researcher at the Université de Moncton, is developing an app based on the Neurocognitive Frailty Index (NFI). Its algorithm assesses a user's likelihood of developing dementia based on factors such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, etc. Pakzad claims the app, which should be ready for use this year, is 90% accurate in flagging individuals at risk of dementia. In her research, she surveyed 800 family physicians in New Brunswick about how they deal with patients who may have dementia. Many doctors told her they’re not well-equipped to diagnose the disease and they don’t know what to do when people complain about memory and cognitive issues.
