Indirect health impacts from extreme heat include poor air quality, increased workplace injuries and increased mental health distress and gender-based violence. While older adults and children are typically more sensitive to heat, so are people with pre-existing health conditions. The CMA says illness from extreme heat waves places extra demands on a system already strained by a lack of primary care access and record ER wait times. Additionally, many of Canada’s health facilities weren’t designed to withstand extreme climate events.
