Experts on dementia, individuals with lived experience with the condition and the Canadian Coalition for Seniors' Mental Health collaborated on the guidelines, which look at non-cognitive symptoms of dementia that can be detrimental to patients' well-being. The guidelines focus on five behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD):
- Agitation;
- Psychosis (including delusions and hallucinations);
- Depressive symptoms and depression;
- Anxiety; and
- Sexual expressions of potential risk.
The CCSMH also put together a toolkit, so people living with dementia, caregivers and healthcare providers can identify resources to assist in the practical implementation of the guidelines.
