In this commentary, Daryl Wilson, former auditor general for New Brunswick from 1997 to 2005, provides examples of how performance measurement could be established, by sector, by the provincial government in its throne speech. Wilson cites survey results by the New Brunswick Health Council regarding primary healthcare and the utilization of health services as a great concern for New Brunswickers. Wilson adds the survey shows citizens aren’t getting the best care and are impacting on emergency rooms staff's ability to deal with emergency situations. He believes this information creates the opportunity for identifying a performance measure and targets that could aim for more of these citizens to see a family doctor.
