Intergenerational housing and care pilot in Toronto to match seniors and students

This Ontario government-funded pilot project is aiming to set the Canadian standard in intergenerational home sharing. The Toronto Homeshare Pilot Project sees researchers, social workers and government officials working solutions to keep seniors in their homes, while students find more affordable housing options. By Sept. 1, the program will match 20 pairs of senior-student roommates through a screening process. Participants will be asked to sign agreements that see the young boarders commit up to seven hours per week to running errands or spending quality time with their older hosts. The project's creators hope the insights they glean can be used to develop a home-sharing model that can be tailored to cities across the country.
