With a $120,000-grant from the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation, a University of Saskatchewan researcher is piloting a cancer care model for First Nations communities. He contends that Indigenous patients find the current system complicated, foreign and inhospitable. To mitigate these feelings, an Indigenous patient navigator will follow cancer patients from First Nations from diagnosis to treatment conclusion. The researcher adds that the pilot will uncover best practices and raise awareness in the health system about culturally-sensitive care.
