Schizophrenia accounts for over 10% of Ont. suicide cases: Study

A study from CAMH and ICES suggests one-in-eight suicide cases in Ontario involved a diagnosis of schizophrenia, even though just 1% of the population has the disorder. Data from 2008 to 2012 finds that the rate of suicide among people aged 25 to 34 is twice as high in individuals with schizophrenia. The study does show that over half of individuals with schizophrenia sought help from the medical community in the 30 days before death, meaning that there are opportunities for interventions prior to suicide.
