According to a CIHI report, hospitalizations of children with asthma were halved over the past decade. However, over that time, the likelihood of a child who lives in a low-income neighbourhood being hospitalized with asthma remained at one-and-a-half times higher than those in more affluent communities. CIHI also determines that childhood hospitalization rates for asthma were twice as high in households where the highest level of education was no better than high school. The reasons for the discrepancies, it concludes, is that lower income and education are associated with risk factors for developing asthma, while effective asthma management can be costly.
