Manitobans pay more for healthcare services than they do in most provinces so the province is reorganizing its healthcare bureaucracy and shifting responsibilities between health organizations. Manitoba Health will no longer provide services directly, such as operating mental health centers. That will be transferred to the new organization called Shared Health. Under the new plan, Manitoba Health will focus on policy, planning, funding and oversight of the healthcare system. The government plans to reduce 12 health organizations to eight, including reducing the number of boards from nine to seven. The changes are expected to save $64 million a year.
