U.K. study calls for increase in mental health education for diabetics, over half treated for mental health issues

This study was carried out by a U.K. online cognitive behavioural therapy provider. It shows that over half of patients with types 1 and 2 diabetes (51%) sought treatment for stress, anxiety, depression or other mental health problems, and three quarters (75%) of young adults (16-34) believe their mental health was negatively affected by their diabetes. Almost half of those surveyed said awareness of diabetes-specific mental health issues could help prevent high levels of stress, anxiety and depression and other mental health problems associated with diabetes. Forty-three percent said mental health education and assessment should be integrated into on-going diabetes healthcare.
