Data from fiscal year 2016-2017 found that 44% of students in grades seven to 12 tried alcohol at least once, an increase from FY2014-2015's figure of 40% and reversing a downward trend observed since FY2008-2009. Health Canada found cannabis use among students in FY2016-2017 was at 17%, unchanged from two years previously. Other findings from the survey include:
- Eighteen percent of students tried cigarette smoking in FY2016-2017, unchanged from FY2014-2015;
- The prevalence of e-cigarette use rose from 20% in FY2014-2015 to 23% two years later; and
- The use of psychoactive pharmaceuticals (sedatives/tranquilizers, stimulants, prescription pain relievers) rose from 4% in FY2014-2015 to 6% in FY2016-2017.
