The app, called SurgeCon, was developed by a RN and a doctor who work at Carbonear General Hospital's emergency department. The app is now used by all front-line staff at the ED. The staff use the app to input information and certain variables about what's happening in the ER. The app's algorithm then calculates the data and predicts the peaks in surge and volume. It also provides suggestions for how to best allocate staff and resources. The Canadian Institute of Health Research gave a $100,000 grant to its developer to enhance their app and Eastern Health has supported the use of the technology.
