A long-term care facility in the Region of Peel in Ontario is one of the first in Canada to adopt a British-developed "Butterfly" dementia care model. In it, staff are encouraged to interact socially with patients, who are grouped according to their stage of dementia. By reducing the institutional aspect of LTCs, the facility evokes a more home-like atmosphere. Since adopting the butterfly model, the home reports patients have less pain, experience unintended weight loss, exhibit more responsive behaviors and social engagement, have fewer falls and reduce their use of antipsychotics. Staff and family also report greater satisfaction with the model of care.
