In the U.S., healthcare company Aetna rolled out a pilot program, Guardian Angel, to encourage the use of non-opioid painkillers, limit the supply of opioids prescribed and educate doctors with outlying prescribing habits. The program provides support for members admitted to the ER for an opioid overdose. A nurse certified as a mental health first aid instructor engages with overdose patients to find solutions in their community to avoid future overdoses. Aetna says the pilot has seen a 40% engagement rate.
