The Kidney Foundation of Canada found a significant proportion of those undergoing dialysis treatment experience financial hardship associated with kidney disease treatment. These costs were found to be related to transportation, dialysis treatment and medication. The foundation calls for all levels of government to address these financial issues by:
- Subsidizing transportation costs and expanding access to travel grants;
- Minimizing disparities in medication access for people with kidney disease and work to offset costs equitably across jurisdictions; and
- Providing support for home dialysis by reimbursing utility costs and consider the financial and health literacy of patients when operationalizing "home first" policies.
