A research associate at the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies (AIMS) predicts that by 2056, there will be 50 seniors for every 100 workers, greatly affecting the health and solvency of the province. In healthcare, the trend that worries AIMS is the accelerating number of New Brunswickers over 65 who aren’t working full-time. The institute says they’re most likely to consume healthcare resources, which absorbs nearly a third of the provincial budget. AIMS finds the province is already over-taxed and severely indebted and believes the trend requires a rethinking of social program provision and spending. With costs increasing for drugs and the rise of mobile forms of healthcare, AIMS believes the province should rethink its commitment to bricks-and-mortar hospitals, an area where it says disruptive market solutions will need to be implemented.
