N.W.T. to hire nearly 50 counsellors, clinical supervisors over four years to promote student health

The N.W.T. government is proposing to hire child and youth care counselors in elementary and high schools across the territory starting in the 2018-2019 school year. The joint effort between the departments of Health and Social Services and Education, Culture and Employment, is still waiting for budget approval to cover the $1.5-million price. The program is in response to a youth engagement activity on student mental health where students specifically asked for more counseling services tailored to their needs. The Northwest Territories Teachers' Association says teachers struggle with helping students meet their mental health needs and considers the four-year program a win-win for students and staff.
