Edmonton's Royal Alexandra Hospital is piloting a managed alcohol program (MAP), in which patients with chronic alcoholism are provided a daily oral dose of ethanol to manage their illness. Only about 15 patients have gone through the program since it was implemented. A hospital spokesperson notes the idea of hospital-imposed abstinence doesn't work for patients with a physical dependency on alcohol, adding that the program may provide an impetus to at least decrease the amount of alcohol patients consume so they can lead more stable lives.
