The community, called The Village, will be designed for people with dementia and be built in Langley, B.C. It will be comprised of six, single-storey, cottage-style homes and a community centre. It will house 78 people with dementia or other degenerative brain diseases associated with aging. Care will be provided by 72 specially trained staff. The estimated cost is between $190 to $245 a day per person, or $6,000 to $7,500 a month. The Village’s design was inspired by the world’s first dementia village, Hogeweyk, in Netherlands. Already, another dementia village is being planned by Vancouver’s Providence Health Care at the St. Vincent’s Hospital.
