Researchers from UBC, Simon Fraser University, McMaster University and the University of Toronto suggest Canadians put off necessities in order to afford the cost of medicines. The data suggest putting off vacation and leisure activities was the number one expenditure that patients forgo in favour of filling prescriptions. However, it's estimated that 730,000 people cut back on their food bills and a further 238,000 reduce their heating expenditures. Also high on the list of trade-offs were transportation costs (376,000), other healthcare expenses (239,000) and housing (206,000).
