The campaign aims to help doctors and patients better communicate and understand healthcare options. Choosing Wisely N.W.T. believes that as much as 30% of healthcare in Canada is unnecessary. This, with over-use of antibiotics is also an issue that the campaign is aiming to diminish. The territory's health authority explained the campaign's goals with an example of a patient who shows up to a clinic with a viral infection. The doctor would basically send the patient home with a "viral prescription" that walks the patient through a number of steps aimed at helping them feel better. Choosing Wisely is an international campaign that exists in 20 countries. It encourages doctors to look at different ways of thinking about diagnostic imaging such as X-rays and MRIs, or lab testing.
