Manitoba's premier wouldn't rule out closing some rural hospitals in the province to save healthcare costs but hinted the facilities may be repurposed instead. Pointing to an aging demographic and shrinking rural populations, Brian Pallister says converting health facilities in smaller communities into long-term care homes could alleviate the increasing number of seniors taking up space in acute care. It would also help the provincial government honour its election commitment to create 1,200 new personal care home beds.
