A report from the Conference Board of Canada forecasts that by 2035, the country will need up to 199,000 new long-term care spaces to meet the demands of an aging population. If that prediction holds true, that represents a 78% increase over the 255,000 beds available in 2016. In the shorter term, CBoC predicts 42,000 LTC spaces will be needed in the next five years. It adds that while the new beds would cost an estimated $64 billion to build and roughly $130 billion to operate between now and 2035, those costs would be overshadowed by savings to the healthcare system.
