A study from the Conference Board of Canada suggests that workers who receive the optimal mental health treatment gain in lifetime productivity, regardless of age. However, workers aged 15-24, who have over 40 years of work life remaining, can realize the greatest lifetime gains, $29,000. Not surprisingly, those in the oldest age bracket, 45-to-64, would have the lowest lifetime productivity gain from mental health treatment, at $9,500. CBoC notes that younger workers often don't have access to workplace benefits coverage but recommends the following be addressed:
- Providing access to mental health supports at an early age;
- Supporting youth during key life transition points, such as moving from high school to college or university;
- Addressing gaps for those in precarious employment; and
- Ensuring the supports provided are effective.
