The director for palliative care services with the health region in Regina, Sask., says before a patient can become eligible for community care, they're assessed based on prognosis, estimated life span, mobility needs and family proximity. Once accepted, palliative community nurses are available for home care delivery seven days a week. She states that hospitals in the city with palliative and hospice care facilities still treat those who can't remain at home but adds the units also serve as an acute care function, managing a patient's short-term health issue before allowing them to return to the community.
