A bill before the Alberta Legislature would allow residents of LTC facilities and their families to establish self-governing councils as of Apr. 1, 2018. The law would only apply to homes with more than four residents but would permit councils at public, private and non-profit LTC and supportive living facilities. The Alberta Government says the councils would have say regarding quality-of-life concerns, such as food, services and activities. The provincial health minister points out that resident and family councils exist at some LTC settings but the legislation is to ensure consistency for all residents.
