U.S.-based Epic Systems will supply Alberta with an advanced clinical information system under the terms of a $459-million agreement. The technology could lead to the implementation of a province-wide EHR system at the 400 healthcare facilities operated by Alberta Health Services. The initial work is expected to begin soon and continue over five years. AHS' president and CEO notes that the health authority operates more than 1,300 information systems, many of which are badly outdated, unconnected and expensive to maintain.
