Health Canada is proposing to ban non-prescription sales of low-dose codeine, an opioid linked to abuse and dependency. The change would make pain pills, cough syrups and other medications that contain codeine available only with a doctor's prescription. Canadians have until Nov. 8 to comment on the proposed regulations. Health Canada acknowledges that although the move could place a greater burden on the healthcare system, patients would also be getting better medical advice about using codeine.
