Speaking at the AGM of the Canadian Medical Association, federal health minister Jane Philpott focused on the need for doctors to play a more active role in improving the health of vulnerable sectors of society. She pointed to Indigenous peoples and those with addiction and mental-health issues as needing the advocacy of physicians to improve outcomes. Philpott also spoke of the opioid crisis, calling it "an unprecedented national public health emergency" and urging a unified response from all levels of government as well as healthcare professionals.
