This is a change from the previously observed ongoing decline. Over time, a decrease in births to individuals under 30 years of age and an increase in births to those over 30 years of age was observed. The New Brunswick Perinatal Health Program report also found:

  • The rate of pre-existing diabetes rose over the past five years and leveled off at 1.3%. Gestational diabetes steadily increased, reaching 10% in 2022-2023;
  • Pre-existing high blood pressure almost doubled amongst pregnant individuals, going from 1.2% in 2018-2019 to 2.2% in 2022-2023;
  • Cannabis use during pregnancy is on the rise since it was legalized; and
  • Over half of pregnant people in N.B. are overweight or obese.
