Legislation tabled in Alta. to create four agencies out of Alberta Health Servies

The UCP government tabled the proposed legislation, which would create four standalone health agencies out of the centralized Alberta Health Services (AHS). Each sector would have its own minister, while the provincial health minister would slide into an oversight role. AHS staff will be reorganized into four specific sectors, operating within more defined parameters with more government oversight. The government claims dismantling AHS will make healthcare delivery more efficient while improving outcomes for patients, adding it won't result in job losses. However, the Alberta Medical Association says that, at a time when integration in health is the buzzword for efficiency, siloing different aspects of care delivery may not be the way to go. The Alberta NDP believes the change will instead allow for more private healthcare while frontline workers say a consultation period could have prevented the need for a complete overhaul.
