While the CMAJ shows young-adult life expectancy is increasingly being cut short by opioids across the country, N.B. recorded its highest number of overdose-related deaths in 2022. The Department of Health found naloxone use has skyrocketed and accidental deaths for which the cause hasn’t been determined - from opioids and stimulants such as methamphetamine - were at record highs in 2022. While N.B. distributed and administered the highest number of take-home naloxone kits in 2023, the report warns their use may not be sufficient as the supply increasingly includes stimulants, such as benzodiazepines.
