England’s diabetes patients to be offered artificial pancreas technology following successful pilot project

The device will prevent life-threatening hypoglycaemic attacks, which can lead to seizures, comas or death for those with Type 1 diabetes. Also, the cost of identifying and treating it is 10% of NHS England’s total budget. The mass rollout of the artificial pancreas builds on a pilot which saw over 800 adults and children given devices to manage of their condition. The system’s called a Hybrid Closed Loop System, where a blood sugar monitor, insulin pump and software on a person's phone talk to each other. The device monitors a person's blood glucose and automatically adjusts the amount of insulin given to them through a pump.
