While the federal plan comes at a time when there's a shortage of dentists and dental assistants in the province, the New Brunswick Dental Society says 78% of its dentists aren’t interested in participating in the federal government’s dental plan because of the administrative burden it would place on dental offices. It says the offices would have to confirm if the patient was eligible for the program and which dental work and treatments were approved under the plan and determine the proper billing. Sometimes it could cause delay for patients needing treatment because the dental offices need to confirm the procedures are covered.
