Experts say feelings of depression can lead people to gain weight, with research suggesting the risk of weight increases in the short term is higher in people who are already obese. The University of Cambridge study found an increase in depressive symptoms was associated with an increase in weight one month later. However, this was only evident in people who were overweight, having a BMI of 25-29.9 or obese, with a BMI higher than 30. Subsequent weight gain wasn’t shown in those with a healthy BMI lower than 25.
