The program will be piloted in ERs in Winnipeg, Selkirk and Brandon and also entail hiring more physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, healthcare aides and hospital case coordinators. The initial cost of the project is $2.75 million, to be allocated this fiscal year. The province notes hospitals only have enough staff to discharge patients during the work week, which means some patients spend more time in hospital than is necessary. This leads to overcrowding and higher wait times in ERs and urgent care centres. Switching to a seven-day-per-week schedule should improve patient flow.
