The province hasn't ironed out the details of the updated funding model but the intention is for nurse practitioners (NP) to be allowed to take on patients at their own clinics sometime next year. Unlike a physician's fee-for-service model, the health minister says the one for NPs will likely include payments for a specified number of clinical hours and other commitments, such as caring for a certain number of patients. To seed the initiative, the Alta. government will provide $2 million to the Nurse Practitioner Association of Alberta over the next three years to implement the payment model, recruit more NPs and set up clinics.
