In 2026, Simon Fraser University (SFU) will welcome its first students to its purpose-built medical school, the first in western Canada in more than five decades. SFU plans to encourage students to practice in underserved communities, including rural, remote and inner-city ones, as well as vulnerable populations, in particular First Nations, Métis and Inuit. The SFU medical school, a partnership with the provincial government, along with the Fraser Health Authority and the FNHA, aims to address the critical shortage of family physicians in B.C.
