Responsible for a quarter of the province’s cancer deaths, lung cancer is being added to N.B.’s cancer screening programs. The program, which will target high risk residents aged 50 to 74 will be available provincewide by spring or summer 2025. It’ll cost the province $3.4 million per year initially. High risk adults in the specified age category include people who are currently smoking or have previously smoked and have a smoking history of 20 years or more. About 3,200 people per year will be eligible for screening via a low-dose CT scan. The lung cancer screening program joins the province’s screening programs for breast, colon and cervical cancer.
