Mental health of pharmacy professionals improved but more support, investments needed to address challenges

One in three pharmacy professionals rated their mental health and well-being as ‘good’ or ‘very good’ over the past year, an 11-point improvement YoY. Risk of burnout among pharmacy professionals decreased 13 points from 92% in 2022 to 79% in 2023. Factors negatively impacting mental health include:

  • Workload during work hours (79%);
  • Work-life balance (63%); and
  • Personal health (52%).

The CPhA says health workforce planning needs to be a priority ensuring there are enough pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to continue to expand into primary care would address some of the workload pressures. Other challenges should be addressed through a national drug shortage strategy, efforts to reduce administrative burden and appropriate funding for pharmacy services.
