Early maintenance mobilization program in N.S. aims to get frail seniors out of hospital sooner - with their mobility intact

Research shows 20% of older adults who were able to walk before being admitted to hospital were no longer able to walk without assistance upon discharge. They may be referred to rehabilitation services at that point. The program aims to meet those patients within 48 hours of admittance while they’re still mobile and encourage them to get up and moving, taking part in activities tailored to their interests. It’s an initiative of the Frailty and Elder Care Network at the Nova Scotia Health Authority. The network proposed to create 45 positions spread among regional hospitals. The staff, trained in recreation or rehabilitation therapy, will be in place by Sept. and each health zone will also have a frailty coordinator.
