Facing an influx of immigrant students, the province's public schools are partnering with a family service agency to assist kids with overwhelming mental health issues like trauma and loss. Up to a dozen counsellors will be placed in targeted schools over the next several months. The three-pronged approach includes:

  1. One-on-one counselling sessions in targeted schools with high numbers of immigrants and refugee students;
  2. Pointing students and their families to additional services in the community that they can access over a longer term; and
  3. Ongoing training and development sessions for parents, family members and teachers connected to immigrant students.
