Mental health workers see opportunities for change emerging from the pandemic but they also see the trauma it left on their patients. When asked for their insights on the state of mental healthcare in Canada, 92% agree the pandemic left traumatic scars, with over half saying the state of parents’ and caregivers’ mental health post-pandemic is somewhat or significantly deteriorating. Yorkville University’s survey also found:
- 78% said economic and financial hardships are the most pressing issues facing individuals suffering from mental illness;
- Over half ranked access to care as one of the most challenging barriers facing people suffering from mental illness;
- 95% believe strongly that virtual mental healthcare services that accelerated expansion during the pandemic were beneficial; and
- 61% also revealed trauma-informed practice as the top area of importance where more attention, training and resources are required for psychotherapists.
