In Atlantic Canada, N.B. and P.E.I. recorded 762 and 85 deaths, respectively. Across Canada, PHAC says the toll reached 50,135 by Jan. 23. Que. saw the most confirmed deaths of any jurisdiction with 17,865 fatalities to date. Ont. has the second-highest provincial death toll, which sits at 15,786, followed by Alta. at 5,470 deaths. Meanwhile, B.C. saw 5,007 deaths. Despite the prevalence of COVID-19 vaccines, treatments and overall immunity to the virus, about 40 Canadians are still dying from COVID-19 per day on average. Public health experts have long said the true death toll is likely far higher than the official count.
