Those experiencing houselessness while struggling with a chronic illness or health issue are more susceptible to complications and repeat ED visits. Under the Bridge Healing Transition Accommodation Program, patients treated at an Edmonton ED who are experiencing homelessness will be housed at a community transition bed. AHS says the length of stay will depend on each person's circumstance, noting patients may require housing, as well as physical health, mental health and addiction services before being successfully moved out of the program. The plan is for 36 community transition beds in Edmonton, with the first 12 expected to open this month.
