B.C. expands program to train foreign doctors to ease family physician shortage

By 2024, the number of seats available through Practice Ready Assessment will triple to 96. The B.C. government says the program provides a pathway for foreign-trained doctors to qualify as physicians in the province. The government also created an associate physician classification for doctors from abroad who don't meet the requirements to practice in Canada. This will allow them to care for patients under the direction and supervision of an attending physician within an acute-care setting. Nearly one million British Columbians don't have access to a family physician, a situation that led to increased pressure on struggling and short-staffed 911 centres, ambulances and hospitals
