The group showed that 42% of its membership recently left a position or are considering leaving as the advocate group wanrs NPs are overburdened and burned out. The NPNB adds six nurse practitioners left the Saint John region over the past year, with some opting to work as an RN, while others left the profession entirely. To maintain a semblance of work-life balance, some NPs asked for temporary reductions to their working hours but were ultimately denied, causing them to leave their practices all together. Senior leadership from both regional health authorities are meeting with NPs around the province and the NPNB is hopeful for change but warns if they can’t accommodate flexible or part-time positions, more NPs will leave.
