Such centres exist in B.C. and Alta. and there are a few in Ont. already. These proposed stand-alone surgical centres would focus on specific elective surgeries, such as replacing knees and hips, to improve efficiency, with the Ontario Medical Association adding more patients would get their procedures done and it would be an improved experience for the healthcare delivery team. They would operate within the publicly funded healthcare system and wouldn’t contribute to a two-tier system. The association believes this system would improve efficiency between 20% to 30%.
